| - The fiancé and I walk in completely eager, because we are in the shopping center four out of seven days in the week, and Retro Bakery is closed every time. I'm excited. These are cupcakes. The finger appetizers of overweight gods. I run up and begin to eye everything I want, as well as what my family would like. A lot of their selection is out, but we did come literally half an hour before they close. Understandable.
Their cupcakes are visually stunning. We take a dozen. Churro, Apple Cider, Maple Bacon, Chocolate Fountain (x2), Peanutbutter Cup (x2), Glazed Donut, Drumstick, and two I cannot recall the names of (I think Raspberry Lemonade and the March Flavor of The Month x2). $29.95, if I recall correctly.
Unfortunately these are a hit or miss for me. They either wow me, or are nearly inedible. The Chocolate Fountain was not good at all. The buttercream was so overwhelming, and the cake was just dry and tasteless. It's almost too much sweet...and that, in my case, is a very rare and unusual statement. The same goes for the Raspberry Lemonade (or whatever the yellow one was). There was a distinct lacking in the flavor of the cake itself; overpowered by the buttercream.
The March Flavor of The Month was very good. The cake was amazing and moist. The frosting was a little stale, but it was tasty. It had a carrot cake frosting, and the cake itself had some delicious nuts with a very subtle vanilla flavor. Awesome.
The Drumstick looked great! Stunning visual appearance! My father loves the actual ice cream cones, so I definitely wanted to grab him one. He said it was alright. It didn't really appeal to him, as the name and appearance had. It was just vanilla, but it was moist and sweet.
I don't know what was up with the Maple Bacon. I was excited because reaching outside of a comfort zone in baking is always fun and impressive. But...only when you do it right. My fiancé took one solid bite and placed it back in the box. The flavors were a good attempt, but the textures of the toppings mixed with the buttercream just didn't work for us. And the actual "maple" taste was a bit overwhelming.
I haven't tried the Churro, Apple Cider, or Peanutbutter yet. But I will definitely update and edit my review based upon their flavor and overall execution. Five stars for appearance! So far, two for actual taste.
