Illinois is a stellar university, with top-ranked programs in engineering, chemistry, accountancy, and physics. Despite its high scholarship, the campus, overall, has a refreshingly unassuming tone. No pretension here.
The student body at this public university is massive, and as such you'll find a range of kids. At the time of this writing, the running count of registered student organizations (RSOs) topped 800! The Urbana-Champaign Hip Hop Congress may be one of my favorites. Each year they put on Hip Hop Awareness Week, which introduces the campus to the origins and history of the hip hop movement.
It would be difficult to capture the world that is Illinois in a Yelp review. But if you're ever in town during the semester, spend some time in the Illini (Student) Union to get an idea of what this place is all about.
