On May 22, 2018 my car overheated. I immediately pulled over and called a tow truck. They towed me to Sahara Chrysler. My service tech seemed rushed and only told me that they couldn't fix the car today. I arranged for a ride home. When I called about five hours later to get a status I was not able to reach my service tech. At the end of the day he called me and said that my thermostat had to be replaced and that I would need a radiator flush for a total of $650. I stated that that was a lot of money just to replace the thermostat. He responded that there were a lot of things that needed to be removed and about 2-3 hours labor to get access to the thermostat.. He called me the next morning about 9:15am informing me that my car was ready. I arranged a ride back and picked up the car. With tax the bill out the door came to: $683.41 - BASICALLY TO REMOVE/REPLACE EITHER A THERMOSTAT OR A THERMOSTAT housing.
A friend of mine is a mechanic with the same vehicle. I visited him the next day to discuss the bill. Within 15 minutes he had the thermostat out of his vehicle and in a bucket of hot water to test it. I returned home and set an appointment for the next morning with Oscar, the Service Manager. I need to say that Oscar was very gracious and polite to meet me with such short notice. He researched what occurred in their system. He explained to me that yes, it should take an hour or less to remove/replace the thermostat but that they also conducted a 2 hour test to make sure that the problem was, in fact the thermostat.
Here is the problem: (1) My bill says nothing about a "two hour test". (2) If they did conduct the test did the mechanic have to stand there for two hours watching it or was he able to go work on another vehicle during that time? (3) At one point my bill states that they had to remove/replace the thermostat, then later remove/replace the thermostat housing. I was charged for a thermostat housing. (4) Why does a 5 year old car need a radiator flushing at a cost of $149.00? The service Manager stated that I could have saved $149 by not having the radiator flushed. Why wasn't I advised that I could skip that if I so choose? I feel that they should have given me the option of conducting the two hour test and allow me to take my chances that the housing/thermostat wasn't the actual problem. In addition, why didn't my tech advise me that I could have bypassed the radiator flush instead of stating "...and you will need a radiator flush"? In my opinion I was overcharged a total of $429 (two hour test at $140/hour and $149 radiator flush).
Oscar eventually offered me a future oil change ($34.95 value) since my paperwork didn't mention the test. I have been a Honda owner for years and decided to try a Chrylser I am used to the high prices from a dealer but not this high. I'm not sure if the over pricing (in my opinion) is due to this dealership (had my oil changed at Chapman Chrysler and there were no other charges), these employees (do they get a commission or kudos for bringing in more money) or this product (is a Chrylser dependable enough to be in my garage versus the mechanics garage?) Bottom line: I am NOT a happy camper and will be looking for a mechanic that doesn't charge $140/hour and that will take the time to advise me what I absolutely need to do and what I can skip. If my car is not under warranty then why do I need to go to the dealer for service? Sahara Chrysler has left a very bad taste in my mouth.
After reading other reviews I notice that nobody from Sahara Chrysler has responded to any of them. Do they even read these reviews? It is apparent to me that they don't care about customer service.
