  • I usually don't go to the chain type places, because I don't like the sales pitch at the end, but I was really hurting yesterday and couldn't get in to the place I prefer. The staff was very nice, the lobby was comfortable and the treatment room was nice. I requested a trigger point massage. If you look on the company website, it says the introductory 1 hour massage is $39. I was charged $49 which was posted on the signage at the spa. I thought maybe I had mixed up the charge as I had looked at several websites that day. I checked the site specifically for this location and it does say $49, however, when you pull up the spa menu on this location's site it does show the $39. So that is unclear. The site lists the types of massages that are "included" and trigger point was on the list. There was no note that there was an additional charge for this type. There is a list of "enhancements" which did have pricing. And, yes, there is the fine print that says prices can change and may vary, but I think it should be noted up front that there is an additional charge just as they do for the enhancements. This only came into play because when the therapist went over my request before she began the treatment she said, "I see you chose the trigger point". Yes. She gave me a short explanation of what that would involve and I was fine with that and looking forward to that. I said I usually get a deep tissue massage and I had marked on my form that I wanted deep pressure, so I knew what I was looking for. I even pointed out several specific spots that I was feeling knots in (and she said the trigger points are often referred to as "knots"). And then she said, well why don't we start with a "regular" massage and then just see if we come across any trigger points that need working on. Uh...ummm..ok, you're the professional. So she then gave me a nice, medium pressure (Yes, I should have asked for deeper, but I thought she was looking for those knots) Swedish massage. When she was done, she said that she didn't find any knots that needed working out so she let the front desk know, so that I wouldn't be charged for something I didn't get. That's when I first realized the TP massage cost more. I went and paid my bill and when she asked if I wanted to put on a gratuity, I said yes, 15%. She said, ok, so $12. I quickly realized she was calculating the tip on the full price of the treatment. I get this and I know it is common practice, so I didn't object. The whole experience left me unsatisfied. I always read the fine print and I realize not checking the exact rate and not thinking about the tip amount, were things I should have done on my own. I work in an industry where I am on the other end of it constantly which is why I am aware and why I didn't contest anything. My bad. But what's really bothering me, is that I did not get the massage I requested. About 15 minutes after I left, the exact knot that I had pointed out to her was aching like crazy and about a 1/2 hour later, my lower back was killing me. It was as if I hadn't had a massage at all. I fell into the trap of thinking I was getting a deal and then having the charges add up. Again, another reason I don't like the chain places, but what I am really unhappy about is not getting the massage I asked for!! I am going back to my favorite place, lesson learned.....
