  • We have attended several "foodie" events, and a remarkable Wine and Food Festival in Big Sur last year. For context, Big Sur cost us $80 a ticket for all the food and wines we experienced, featuring great California wines and food from the best restaurants. It was held under a beautiful big tent and NEVER felt like a cattle run. Plenty of room to walk and eat. We tried many things we had never had before, including these amazing chocolates that looks like blue glass. Truly artful food. For us, this Toronto event is a real miss in many respects. First, we had purchased VIP tickets to the preview night. To us, "VIP", at more than double the regular price, implied a more special experience, smaller crowds, etc. Lol, not. We arrived at 6:00 to find the most ridiculous line we have ever seen. Half an hour to buy the $1 sampling tickets which are the currency of the event. Forty minutes to even get in. A stunning example of what "VIP" is NOT. Once inside we found maybe 10 aisles of companies promoting their beers, spirits, wines and food. Most things are by no means inexpensive (there were very few free samples) and it was a huge turnoff to pay $4 and up for the tiniest wine tasting. These vendors should be overpouring, not skimping. The best value at the show was $1 Bloody Caesars by Mott's. There were a few $1 beers and shots, but other than that, you could drop $6 on a paltry wine tasting or food dish. The wines are, for the most part, very common and lower end. We spent $80 on the food tickets, plus $90 for two to get into the "VIP" night. Certainly was not worth $170 plus parking, and as the evening went on, the crowds surged. We could barely move, and I was told the rest of the weekend would be worse, which renders it a complete waste of time in our minds. In the summer we attended a fabulous foodie event here in town, in a small warehouse space, for $10 plus food, limited to two shifts and 200 people per shift allowed it. It featured some of Toronto's best restaurants and food truck food, and it was a lovely, lovely event. This one is out of control, and needs to take a step back if they are in it for anything but the short-term bucks.
