| - In summary, for those in a rush:
- Very friendly staff
- Facility is incredibly clean and well maintained
- Lots of machines available even at peak times
- Lockers use an annoying "key card" system but bracelets are available for purchase
- Showers are sometimes out of body wash
- It would seem some gym patrons in the men's locker room have "sticky fingers" - watch those valuables!
- An excellent, friendly and modern gym that I highly recommend.
I was previously a member at another, higher-priced Bay Street "luxury" gym and while I liked it, the location and hours proved inconvenient and shelling out over $150 per month for coat check, fancy locker rooms and eucalyptus towels was a bit much (sorry, Equinox!)
So, back on the fitness wagon this summer, I went in search of a new gym; but didn't want to become a faceless member of "that" behemoth chain that's always crowded at peak times. Enter Hard Candy Fitness!
CLASSES: I generally focus on cardio and weight training, so I can't comment on the group classes personally; although I have heard lots of good things from fellow gym patrons.
STAFF: All the staff from desk attendants to membership sales and maintenance crew are very friendly. An interesting observation is they seem to have lots of Australian staff here. All very helpful!
FACILITY/EQUIPMENT: The gym is quite new and this is evident in the modern machines and overall quality of upkeep through the facility.
With plenty of cardio and weight machines, I've never once had to wait or felt that the place was too crowded even during peak hours. To me, this ease of working out is worth the slightly above average price point on its own!
LOCKER ROOMS: The locker rooms are well maintained and spotlessly clean, with plenty of clean towels readily available. Hair gel, mouthwash and disposable razors are also provided. That said, this is where the gym falls just short of a 5-star rating. I have found on numerous occasions that most of the showers are out of the body wash in their dispensers, and have had to "hop around" to another stall or two before finding one with a filled cartridge.
My second gripe with the locker rooms is their "key card" lock device. It becomes quite cumbersome to carry a lock mechanism the size of a credit card through the gym and into the shower. Along with many patrons I have lost my card and as such trade a piece of ID for a temporary card each visit. There are far superior bracelet locks available for $30, however the gym has been out of stock for about a month at the time of this review (July 26, 2015)
My only other issue (and I imagine this is typical of many gyms) is that I had left a hat on the coat rack as I was changing one day, and when going to retrieve it a few hours later it had been taken. My own fault for not being more careful, but a point to watch out for especially if bringing valuables to the gym!
All that said, I am a very satisfied member at Hard Candy and would certainly recommend this gym as a "step" above life at the not-so-Good (haha) major chain gyms I'm the city.
