| - Two different reviews for breakfast then dinner.
Brunch: 4/5
For the life of me, I canNOT get past the first listing on the menu. I think they are just good enough to not look elsewhere. The Eldorado eggs - two poached eggs on top of a blue corn cake with tomatoes, grilled scallions, and smoked bacon, with scallion-lime cream sauce (on the side for me). Served with greens and house potatoes. All of it combined just works. The most interesting thing is the blue corn pancake. They are small, with a slight hint of sweetness. Texture is still pancake-y, not gritty like cornmeal. I like 'em. Also, they know how to poach. The hit-or-miss is the consistency of how warm/hot/cool the dish comes to the table. 4/5
Bloody Mary - very good. Tied for second favorite in town. It's house made, decent garnishes, good flavor. 5/5
My brunch buddies LOVE the Hit The Trail Flapjacks - they are the yummy, healthy pancake. BIG pancake with nuts and berries all over it. It really does look great (I had a bite, tastes good too!) I love that they have a pancake that's not whip cream crap all over it. But I need my savory eggs in the morning, and these flapjacks are just too much food to add as a "side." 4/5
Dinner: 3/5
They call themselves a "smokehouse" and I'm checking out local "BBQ" places. So I thought I'd try the BBQ.
Chicken "Enchiladas" - this one really bugged me. It's a FLAUTA (or Taquito, depending on where you're from). Not an enchilada! Google it. Not many places in Madison do this, so I understand why people are raving about them, but shesh, these are just average for any Southerner, and I mean as a flauta/taquito. 2/5
Baja Fish Taco - Mahi mahi fish, blackened. It was average-good. Sub limes for cheese and aioli. Slaw coulda had a little more pizzaz, but overall, this was the best dish of the night. 3/5
Pork ribs - not real BBQ, maybe oven "BBQ?" The meat was not dry, but mildly moist; not tender, but not brittle, fatty short rib, and no "smoke." The sauce was ok (tangy). 2/5
Side note: I saw the chicken friend chicken - this is not traditional (pounded with softer breading) CFC for a Southerner. This version is a chicken breast deep fried, but it was a very BIG portion. It beat up the woman who ordered it.
Overall, I really like the brunch and bloody. The dinner was ok, but I'd probably go again with friends.
(On BBQ list, place is 9th.)
