| - My 4 star rating is with a big fat juicy caveat... Let me start with the 'bad' part.
To their GLUTEN FREE customers... BE VERY, VERY careful. We dined there with my sister today for lunch. She has ciliac and has to be very careful not to eat any gluten. Since this restaurant was highly ranked as gluten free-friendly, we decided to go.
The menu clearly labels which items are GF. BUT the menu wasn't accurate... We were told by our server that some of the dishes have changed, and the menu hasn't been updated to reflect these changes. You must be careful to ask the server all the right questions to ensure your dish is truly GF. For example, one of the dishes is GF. Our server recommended it, saying it was tasty. When we asked her in detail what it was like, she ended her description with 'and only very lightly breaded' before frying. When we inquired about the breading, she said, "it's not real bread... It's panko". We felt embarrassed to explain to her that panko bread crumbs are real bread. Duh.
So she ordered the salad, which had raspberries, goat cheese, and grilled chicken. Looked delicious, and the menu said it's GF. She even asked that the candied pecans be left out, since we didn't get a good feel from her that she knew if the chef used flour or not (because some do). The salad arrived, and the goat cheese had a slight ... coating ... on it that caused us to be concerned. The server assured us it's grilled goat cheese and that the coating we saw was from the grill. We asked her to please double check and it turns out they use rice crispies to coat the cheese. Rice crispies??? I know there is GF rice crispies, but we doubt they're using it. We sent the entire salad back to be re-made, in case gluten crumbs remain on the rest of the food.
Enough with the bad. Let's do the 'good' part.
The food at this restaurant is simply amazing. Full of flavor, fresh as if you cooked it yourself, I would not hesitate to eat here again, sans my GF relatives and friends. I had the tuna sandwich for lunch, along with the potato salad. It was fantastic. One of us got the crabcake, and being originally from Baltimore, we know good crabs. This crabcake rivals those we would get back home. I had no room for dessert, but I definitely will come back and order dessert next time I'm there.
There's a large outdoor patio (front and rear), so dining al fresco is pretty easy. During the heat of the summer it might be a bit uncomfortable, but the rest of the year it's fantastic.
Bottom line: if you aren't concerned about your food content (vegan, GF, or vegetarian) then I highly recommend this place. If you go because they offer GF or any specialty diet-friendly food, then I warn you to exercise caution: know exactly what you can/can't have, and ask the server. If the server seems unsure, ask to speak to the chef or someone else in the know.
