  • We were saddened tonight, when we headed out to take my father out for some Thai cuisine (which he has never eaten before) at our favorite restaurant (Komol) that they had closed for a large dinner party..... :( :( :( So since we were already in the plaza, figured we'd give Lotus a try (we really have been meaning to eat here, but why venture away from great stuff if they are open!) (sorry Lotus, not knocking you down at all here, but hard to venture away from your local spot once you get comfy!) Ok, inside, I will say - it is very brightly lit up with multiple chandeliers all over the ceiling. Decor wise, just about every wall space is filled with some group's photo & the owner of the restaurant somewhere. Not really sure what that is about. I know the owner of the restaurant was featured in a chef competition that had aired recently (can't even remember which one to be honest) on Food Network. Moving on - crab cake appetizer, steamed mussels, crispy duck with chili mint sauce, crab fried rice, and rad na with beef. Crab cake appetizer - took me by surprise as the texture seemed to be more sponge like compared to the european crab cake version. Very tasty, but like I say - just a bit surprised from the texture. Steamed mussels - oh yeah a big hit! We were taken aback by the size of the mussels as they were quite large, but still very tasty! And oh baby does that sauce have some KICK! Not enough to have the fire department putting it out, but a good 'Woah what was THAT?!!!" sensation. Crispy duck - yup sure was crispy! Meat was very tender though, and the chili mint that accompanies this dish is very refreshing. You can alter your spice level, and if it was a bit hotter would probably be better, but for the heat sensitive you still have a hint of the heat. Crab fried rice - nothing really fancy about this dish it is as it says fried rice with crab in it! Only thing about this dish to say would be to chunk up the crab meat a little more instead of having long leg chunks mixed in, to get a better ratio of crab to rice chunks. And then there is the rad na noodles with beef. The dish came out wallowing in a pot of brown gravy. And I will admit, I was disappointed at the lack of noodles in the mix. We barely had enough to go on 3 plates for the adults and 1 toddler. Plenty of beef was served up mind you, but would have preferred a bit more noodle. And the gravy, well didn't really stand out to my tongue palate - just ok. Would I eat here again? Maybe to be honest. Personally I find Komol a bit better in the taste department, but I haven't had all the specialties here at Lotus - so I can't really say. But based on what I have experienced - some dishes are WOW, and others are 'eh'. Service wise - it was busy tonight, and the staff was rushed and you could tell. The front door had a sign up asking customers to expect a 1 hr. wait for their food due to a large group being in the restaurant. We were lucky to get in beforehand, so our service was quick - but you could sense the staff was a little on edge. Our server was friendly and polite enough, but I know they were scrambling to stay on top of the large group. Anyways - that's my word for here. Happy dining!
