| - It's pretty laughable that any car dealership has the motto "No Bull". I mean, it's a car dealership. Everyone's job in the place is to BS you. So over the weekend, we went to Earnhardt to test drive and buy a car. We had already done a ton of research and knew what we wanted so we met up with a salesman (Sean, I think?) and test drove the vehicle we wanted and then sat down to negotiate. We did our brief credit app and after waiting a little while, the liaison (I call him that because clearly he had no knowledge of credit and was just the middle man) came in and went over our app with us and asked us what payment we were looking for. I have fallen into that trap countless times before in my youth, but now I am a grown adult with plenty of knowledge of how financing works so we were not about to play that game. I told the young man that we weren't looking for a payment, that we wanted to know what the price of the vehicle was and what the interest rate was going to be and from there, we would figure out the numbers. So he went back in to the credit people who do the actual work and came back with some numbers written down. The price of the car was $33k and some change, and he had 3 options of payments for us for a 60, 66, and 72 month loan. Each payment was over $750. We laughed. We said first off, your website is showing this vehicle for $28,999 and we are not paying more than that. Second, what unGodly interest rate were we quoted to get that payment? I let him know that hey, I do finance for a living too and I was not going to fall for the normal tactics they employ on people. So he explains to us why we can't get the advertised E-price for the car (he says we didn't read the fine print) and goes back to the finance people to see what he could do.
He came back and what do ya know.... he was able to get the payment down over $200. Crazy, right? Oh and he also said he could give us the E-price on the car and told us what our interest rate would be, which was a rate I was ok with. Woohoo! But wait... now we need to come in with additional down payment of over $1700 (the cost of the tax) and there are $1500 in charges for paint protection and an anti-theft device. So we told him that we aren't putting any money down, period. They had my trade and that was all we had. And what are these add-on fees? He explained that they are dealer add-ons so we said well we don't want/need them so remove them. He can't he says.... he can we tell him. So he goes back to the drawing table and comes back. We don't need any money down and he has taken off the $699 fee for the paint protection and in doing that, our payment is even lower. We are getting close! So me and the hubs tell him if he can take off that one last $799 fee for the anti-theft device, we have got a deal. He tells us he probably can't make that happen, but he lumbers out to find out. 5 minutes later he is back and announces "You Win!". We finally got the deal we wanted. We got the car for a GREAT price, got a fair interest rate and we didn't have to pay for all of their BS add-ons. At this point, we were over the moon. We had just negotiated the crap out of this car purchase. So we then waited for the REAL finance guy.... and waited.... and waited.... and waited. It was their first weekend in their new location and the 202/Val Vista so they had all sorts of food and were kind enough to offer us pizza. And their new dealership is really beautiful and filled with comfy recliners so at least it was a comfortable wait.
We finally sit down to sign the papers. I liked the finance guy, he was cool. So cool, he sold us on this massively huge warranty which then took our payment that we had negotiated so low, back up a little. But these cars nowadays are like 2% gas and oil and 98% computers, and the repairs can be costly so we THINK it's worth it. I hope so anyway.
So to sum it up, the dealership itself is really nice. Our salesperson was just ok. I mean, maybe he's great but we were pretty much already sold on the car so he didn't have to do much work other than tag along for a test drive. The finance liaison was a nice kid, but not someone that I would want representing me if I were running a huge company like that. He just didn't seem to know much and he acted really uncomfortable talking to people. But whatever, he ultimately got the job done. In the end, I got the deal I wanted and was very pleased. I wish I hadn't need to pull so many teeth to get it, but their job is to make money so I get it. Just don't think for one second that that "No Bull" motto means anything.
