  • Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Detroit have beautiful conservatories that for some reason Cleveland lacks. That said, Cleveland Botanical Garden is one special place. The outdoor theme gardens are well designed and beautifully maintained. My particular favorites are the herb garden and the restorative garden. On summer days I enjoy sitting on a bench reading a book among the fragrant plants in the restorative garden. Lunch at an outdoor table overlooking the lily pond and lush plants is another joy of summer in Cleveland. In spring the thousands of flowering bulbs make me glad I live where the seasons change. I look forward to the wisteria that bloom by the doors leading from the cafe. In the cold dreary days of January I take refuge in a desert or tropical cloud forest if only for a few hours. Being so warm that I have to remove my coat as butterflies and birds fly about is a strong defense against the winter doldrums. The salads, sandwiches and soups at the Garden Cafe are prepared by Bon Apetit Catering. If I had a personal chef I would want one who worked for Bon Apetit. Lastly the gift shop offers unique and beautifully designed items. Frequently I give myself a book or a set of wind chimes from their shelves. No matter what bills I may have, my annual membership to the gardens will be in the pile marked MUST BE PAID.
