  • This review is about 4 months over do & honestly it could have been positive so easily, but unfortunately when the hospital puts an absolute, uncaring moron in charge of fixing people, it says a lot about their commitment to care. So here's what happened, a 25 pound weight rolled out of the back of my SUV & completely crushed my wife's big toe, literally shooting a jet of blood down the drive way & smashing the bones in her toe to shards...there goes the field goal kicking gig with the Raiders...the toe looked like it had been split open...blood was pouring from the tip, the bottom and the nail bed...obviously not something I was going to be able to just throw a band-aid on. My first instinct was to go to Care Now quick care which is right around the corner, but I thought the severity of the injury merited a trip to St. Rose..BIG MISTAKE...it was about 11PM so the ER valet was closed, but fortunately there was a wheel chair available to grab before I had to go & park my car...this was frustrating, but there was a friendly employee that was kind enough to wheel my wife in, at this point I'm thinking, "okay, someone is helping my wife & she will be out of pain soon...so I get the car parked without running over any random wildlife & enter the emergency room where I see my wife in the wheel chair, with someone from admitting chanting the same question in monotone over & over again to her...now, full disclosure, my wife sort of shuts down when she is really hurting, but you'd think since she's sitting there with a ziplock bag filling with blood taped around her foot & her face streaked with tears & mascara, admittance might have cut her some slack...NOPE not gonna happen on her watch! "Who's your insurance, who's your insurance, who's your insurance" The ER wasn't that full, a few weekend warriors in need of patch jobs & people coughing quietly while waiting their turn to go back. My wife was very distraught and was crying...people handle pain differently, some are stoic & some cry...it was obvious that St. Rose staff preferred their emergencies in an unobtrusive sound free style...there were plenty of eye rolls & head shakes when I would look over at the people behind the desks. After about 20 minutes of waiting my wife wanted some water, so I approached one of the admitting people about getting a cup of water & was told "vending machines around the corner". Unfortunately the vending machines only had soda, so I made a mad dash from the back of the St. Rose campus to the cafeteria in front & bought water. Water problem solved & after about another 20 minutes we go back. Now the nurse who helped us was very nice, he was interested in her situation, wanted to know what happened & continually told her things would be okay. Unfortunately he was not going to be the one doing the actual repair...so, I'm thinking, "yes they are rude up front & see her injury as "just a toe", but this guy is great & she'll be okay now...NOPE!...enter the PA...to label her a moron is actually an insult to morons out there who are trying to make there way up to being simply stupid...I assumed she was a Dr. though she seemed very young, but hey, I watch Grey's Anatomy I saw what Yang and Torres could do when they were in residency, & I'm still thinking, "cool, get in there and fix that crushed digit, Mer!" She takes one look at my wife's tear and makeup streaked face then looks down at the now exposed toe, & lets out an exasperated sigh. I start explaining what happened & it was obvious by the look on her face that number of shits she could give about the injury could fit on the head of a pin. She looked over the xray of the toe which showed multiple fragments of bone & basically said, "not much to do, it's just a toe." She removed the nail & then started throwing random stitches into the toe, while I kid you not, she continuously looked up & watched tv between stitches. At one point she said, "This toe is killin me smalls"...I finally piped up & said, "really? How do you think it is for her?" Once finished with her sewing (12 stitches) she actually put the nail back on, taped it up & said come back in 10 days to get them out. We opted for our Dr. for that & when he looked at the toe, he was appalled. He said this needs a specialist, which was set up the next day...he too was appalled & perplexed as to why the nail was replaced. So he pried that back off to expose & remove the stitches...fun..then delicately removed a sliver of bone, which was half way in, half way out & asked why we didn't come see him sooner. I explained the "come see us in 10 days" comment from the PA & he was pissed..."they should have sent you here the next day, I could have pinned the bones so that your toe wouldn't be deformed like it will be now". Deformed!!!...nice..long story short, I'd reroute my ambulance to Anthem animal hospital before allowing myself to be treated at St Rose!
