  • I haven't written a review in a long time, but something must be done about this place. Let me start by saying that I've been a member at this gym for several years. I joined shortly after it opened and was a Gold's Elite Gym, upon the encouragement of some friends in the neighborhood, who said it was close, cheap, and super nice. I have been a member of many gyms from nice ones to so-so ones, and I am currently also a member of Mountainside. I joined for a $40/month plan that includes unlimited guest access (as long as I'm in attendance), and parking. At first, it seemed great. The facility isn't large, but everything was clean, brand new, and I liked parking in the garage. It doesn't have a huge amount of equipment (only 4 ellipticals, about 12 treadmills + some in the cinema, adequate weight machines and free weights), but it is super convenient for me, and doesn't have daycare so no kids running around. All was fine until it converted to EOS. I have seen zero maintenance since EOS took over about a year and a half ago, both of the facilities and equipment. Here are some things of note: 1. At any given time, 3 out of 4 (often all 4) of the elliptical machines are broken, 5 or so of the treadmills, and 1-2 of the 4 stationary bikes. They never seem to get fixed. All of the ellipticals used to have working TVs, but now are down to only 1 with a working TV. This is not recent- it has been this way for almost the entire time EOS has owned the gym. The one that does have a working TV makes a horrible clunking sound/vibration when you use it. 2 out of the other 3 do too. As of last week, one did operate correctly (without a TV), but when I came last Sunday, it was literally missing a pedal, which was laying next to it on the ground. Today (Wednesday) when I went in, it was still in the same state, no sign, and I watched 2 people try to get on it. This is a hazard and a liability. I would also assume the rest of the clunking ellipticals could go that same route at any given time, potentially injuring someone. When I was leaving today, I told the staff at the front desk that they really need to put a sign on the broken elliptical missing the pedal, and they had no clue. It's been that way at a minimum for 4 days. This shows you the maintenance ethic in this place. 2. The place is incredibly dirty. I get that people sweat in gyms, which makes it all the more important that they are thoroughly cleaned at least once a day. Any time I go in there, there is debris on the floor, and the machines are grimy- not 1 day grimy, MONTHS grimy. Today I noted two separate globs of gum on the floor. 3. The paper towel dispensers often don't work, and there's no anti-bacterial solution to be found. This may contribute to #2 above. Today I had to go to 3 towel dispensers before I found one that worked, and that one didn't have any anti-bacterial, so I had to walk across the gym, get the towel, walk to another one, get the anti-bacterial, and go back across the gym to wipe down my machine. Most people don't have that type of dedication to good gym etiquette. 4. They often do not have small towels, which are included in your fee. How often? I'd give it a good 60% of the time. That may be too generous. The counter staff shrugs and says "all we have are big (body) towels. People steal them. They're on order." It's hard to use a body towel to wipe sweat when on a machine. Again, this most likely contributes to #2. When you're on a "out of small towels cycle", it usually takes 3 weeks to a month to get more in stock. 5. Every 10th time or so, a new person behind the counter harasses Sweet Pea and myself when we check in, telling me that my membership "doesn't cover a guest." Covering a guest was the primary reason I chose the membership level I did. Trust me, it's included. After making me feel like a criminal and questioning me, they eventually "make a note in my file", which is then disregarded the 10th time after that. The cycle repeats. It has gotten to the point where the location is not enough to keep me there. You'll have to decide whether $40 a month (I assume that's still the going rate) is worth it to you to join a gym that at best, is on par with a gym in an apartment complex, and less clean. Most of all I hope that someone pays attention to this review and does something before someone is seriously injured.
