| - I tried Las Chicas for the first time this week, when they were parked in Oakland. Having moved to Pittsburgh from out West, including 6 years in Tucson, AZ, I'm always excited to try new independent Mexican food options in Pittsburgh. And those options have much improved in recent years, without question. I don't think I'll be adding Las Chicas to the list, though. The steak burrito, "fully loaded", was okay but not memorable. Both the beans and rice were flavorful, and the hot salsa had a pleasant kick. However, it was hard to find the steak. My biggest complaint is regarding the value. The burrito cost $10 when "fully loaded" (adding guacamole, sour cream, etc.). Overpriced Mexican food is not unusual in Pittsburgh, but still tough to swallow compared to the prices at top-notch independent places out West. And it's particularly hard to accept these prices at a food truck, given that they should be dealing with less overhead than a brick and mortar. Maybe I'm misunderstanding food truck economics, but the bottom line is that, sadly, I'm more likely to go to a chain--Chipotle or Qdoba--than go back to Las Chicas if I want a decent if unremarkable burrito while in Oakland.
