I was gifted a cupcake from Choklat in December. It looked amazing- dark batter with a huge mound of obviously thick, dense frosting on top. Unfortunately it looked better than it tasted- the cake part was nothing special and the icing was actually kind of gross. However, I happened to find myself in Inglewood this afternoon and thought I'd stop in to see what else they had. I understand that it's a store and factory environment but the the decor couldn't be much worse- the display case of baked goods looked cheap, the shelving units looked cheap too, and the production area in the back was quite sad-looking. It felt a bit like a doctor's office, actually. As soon as I saw they only accept cash I knew I wouldn't be able to buy anything, but I checked out their hot chocolate menu just for fun. The salesgirl said that their hot chocolate is thick and European style, which I love (having lived in Europe for several years and worked for one of the continent's biggest chocolatiers), but why should I pay SIX DOLLARS for hot chocolate here when it's one euro in most European cafes and restaurants? My suggestion? Save your six dollars until your next trip to Riga, Latvia, then buy six cups of hot chocolate from the vendor in the train station. It's sure to be just as good for a minute fraction of the price. And they take credit cards!
