I'm giving Sanagan's two stars because my experiences with the butchers have been pretty good; efficient service fairly knowledgable - nothing too fussy but a nice selection of meats and house made sausages. Today however we stopped in and had sandwiches at the counter - yuck! First of all, wiping your nose with the hand you're touching food with is gross and unsanitary. Placing the extremely dirty rag you're cleaning the counters with on top of the food - ewwww!! I was pretty shocked at the counter dude's apparent lack of basic knowledge about food prep and cross contamination. Going to be writing an email to the manager about those observations - oh yeah and picking food up off the floor with the gloved hand you then use to finish cooked food with? Pretty sure that's not considered a safe food handling practice, either. The actual sandwiches were a total disappointment. Jerk pork was over powered by cloves, not enough / flavourless slaw, chicken was actually bad tasting. I think soaking in water all day probably sucks all flavour out of it, not even the overly generous smear of mayo could help.
Also lost points for having no nitrite-free deli meats.
Disappointing. Will stick to the butchers. They do have a great selection of artisanal breads, but the uncovered donuts by the cash? Yeah, mouth level for coughing kiddies - just a heads up.
