| rev:text | This review is purely based on their 3:15 cake. To put the 2 stars into context, the cake is not bad, but at this price point, we were just expecting a lot more.
Based on the description on their website, the cake includes flavours of a classic Hong Kong-style afternoon tea. The concept of combining milk tea and pineapple bun flavours into a cake was novel and exciting, but unfortunately, we didn't feel the concept carried through to execution.
We were thrown off by how subtle the HK milk tea flavoured mousse was (a little more sugar would have helped too). Additionally, we couldn't taste the pineapple bun AT ALL, despite the pineapple bun crumble on the exterior of the cake (and small traces of it inside). At $38 for a 6 inch cake, we were definitely expecting bolder flavours, and more textural elements to add complexity. However, the only textural component we found were a few tiny flavourless crunchy pearls, which didn't add much to the cake.
For me, the best part of the cake was the 3 milk tea flavoured macarons added on the top. They were flavourful and had a great texture.
Overall, this cake was a letdown for us, although we will likely return to try out the rest of their visually pleasing macarons. They may just be a bit too cute to eat though! |
