| - Walking into the same plaza as Hobak and Hachi Ramen, a pleasant surprise awaits-- you'll see a large wooden door comparable to a historic fortress. Open it and you'll find yourself in a modern rustic cafe with an elegant greenhouse meets bookstore ambiance and fairy lights as if you're walking into the set of your favorite contemporary Korean drama. To call this place beautiful would be an understatement. Its everything I would want to engross myself in as I take in sips of tea with cake on the side.
We ordered a little bit of everything. Sad to say by 3pm they already ran out of the rose lychee cake and the danmee cake. I do wish they had earl grey-centric desserts or tea but one can only dream for now.
Savory foods we ordered were the fig balsamic salad and the Norwegian smoked salmon brioche. the salad wasn't out of the ordinary (fairly done with softer tones of blue cheese) but it does make a healthy treat, especially with the arugula, pecan and cranberry. The brioche on the toast was soft in texture (easy to slice with a fork, knife not needed) and the smoke salmon mixed with capers didn't have a fishy aftertaste which is always a plus.
Matcha latte with matcha red bean cake (smooth, not bitter tasting for both, the red bean on the cake wasn't overpowering) and tiramisu cake (soft mascarpone, chocolatey but not decadent) were adequate although nothing spectacular. The slice of rainbow roulade cake, although flamboyant in color is plain to taste, however I feel that it was on purpose and meant to be mixed with coffee or a latte for flavor (like dipping cookies or a biscotti in coffee for example). Tofu cheesecake was absolutely delectable, lovely in every bite especially with the added small slice of citrus on top mixed with crumbs.
Perhaps my current favorite there would be the Yuzu Omija being the most citrusy-tasting drink from the menu. A pleasant and refreshing pick me up on a hot 90-degree day.
Many of the servers are convivial and attentive especially when our plates were empty. It was nice touch having a variety of ethnic employees instead of sticking to one racial majority, especially at a Korean cafe. I absolutely love how their open kitchen is inside of a modern greenhouse at the center, you get to see the pastry chefs work their magic as many of their menu items are freshly made to order.
Do take note of the free wifi. You can ask a server for it, or see the note posted somewhat conspicuously near the coffee bean brew area at the entrance to your right.
Overall, unquestionably satisfactory for a soft opening. I'm sure they are still working out a few kinks but I am confident of their success and hopeful for extended hours especially for students and late night prowlers (why hello there, 24/7 city). Undoubtedly will be the go-to hangout spot of the summer.
