BEWARE - PERMANENT DRIVER'S LICENSE CARD NOT ISSUED AT TIME OF VISIT.
I received a letter from the DMV saying that because my license was more than 10 years old, I had to get a new license with an updated picture and also take a vision test.
Never mind that the place was packed, and I had to stand in a lot of different lines, and it took a long time...
At one checkpoint, they took my existing license away from me, and told me to go stand in another line to get my updated photo.
After they took the photo I was told to go sit down and wait to be called. They called me and I went to a window where they showed me a photocopy of what my new license would look like, and asked me to verify all the information. I thought they were having me confirm the info before cutting the new license card.
But instead they just gave me the piece of paper as a temporary license and told me the actual card would be mailed to me within 15 business days. (That's three weeks y'all.)
We had an airline trip planned and I said I needed a driver's license to get past security and to rent a car. And they told me to show them the paper copy and said that the airlines, TSA, and rental car company "might" accept it as a valid ID but it was at their discretion. But even if I got out of Phoenix with the temporary ID, who's to say that I could get back to Phoenix with the temporary ID?
When I asked for my original ID back, they said they had already destroyed it. (Not sure if that was really true or not...)
So we cancelled the trip until my permanent ID came.
In the original letter they sent me they never said that a permanent driver's license card would not be issued to me on the spot and/or that only a temporary ID would be issued to me. And they never told me that at the DMV until I had already surrendered my old license and they had destroyed it.
Beware you probably won't walk out with your new driver's license card.
And they never did check my vision.
