  • We visited Thorncreek on a beautiful fall evening and were looking forward to good food and wine. Our experience was a horrible disappointment. While the ambiance was nice, both the food and wine were poor to average. I just got the impression that Thorn Creek is trying to be "classy", but sadly falling very short in many areas. The ladies bathroom had rocks sitting in the bowl of a dated vanity that you would see in a 1990's suburban home. I think it was an attempt to be trendy at a bargain price. We ordered a flight of their "Reserve", which was supposed to be their better wine. We paid $16 for the flight of six tastings. Other than the Merlot, the others all had a fizziness - a common flaw in fermentation or bottling when making homemade wine. But this is unacceptable in professionally bottled wine. The wines were all very flat, with no complexity at all. We asked our waitress where Thorncreek got the grapes for their wines and her response was that the grapes came from "all over the place" but "we mix the juice downstairs". From the taste of the wine, they must have "mixed the mix downstairs" with no winemaking experience. There was no date on the bottle, which should have told us something. The food was equally disappointing. We are empty nesters and don't mind spending money on a nice dining experience. The menu is small and limited to small plates. That's fine, as we enjoying sampling and sharing different dishes. We first ordered the Jarlsberg Chicken Dip. There was no chicken to be seen in the dip. THe serving size was very meager - even for a small plat. The flavor wasn't bad, it was just cost twice as much as it should have for the quantity and ingredients. We asked our waitress for a recommendation since we were still hungry after the chicken dip. She suggested the chicken meatballs. The meatballs were served with an extremely small side salad (4 bites tops) which was drenched in a thick dressing that was way overdone. However, we were glad for some flavor as the five meatballs and few tablespoons of rice were so dry and without flavor that we could not have eaten them alone. There were 5 meatballs, about the circumference of a quarter. Again, extremely overpriced for the quantity and quality. We will not return to Thorncreek. There are much better places to spend a beautiful evening without the disappointment of dropping over a hundred dollars for bad wine and food.
