| - I actually like this airport quite a lot. And my opinion has become more favorable since the pedestrian tunnel was completed. The airport is easy to navigate and the facilities are reasonably nice. But the best thing about this place is its convenience to downtown TO. It is the airport that gets the label of "easiest-to-use" in my experience.
The HQ for my company is in city centre TO and I use Bishop a fair amount. The connection from Windsor for me is quite convenient. I hope that Porter Airlines, the major tenant at Bishop, adds Detroit Metro to their list of US airports serviced at some point in the near future as I would love to fly from my home airport to access TO in the easy manner allowed by YTZ. As it is, the flight schedules offered in and out of Bishop are quite adequate.
The recent completion of the tunnel has been wonderful. In the past, it required a ferry ride to get from the island airport to the mainland. While a fun novelty, the ferry was slow and one was always on someone else's schedule. The tunnel allows the process of getting to and away from the airport to be much more flexible. The only thing I can say is that I am hoping there are plans to put in stairs or an escalator on the mainland side as the only way to ground level currently is via elevator.
The tunnel has made access to the airport even better. However, the thing I have always liked about this airport is the ease of getting to and from the facility. Taxi rides from downtown are not terribly expensive. But I have often walked to my hotel or my HQ office from Bishop. By walking out of the airport and directly up Bathurst, many parts of city centre are accessible on foot. The last time I used this airport, I made the 20-or-so-minute walk from Richmond and Bathurst.
The airport facilities are also nice. I cannot speak for the Air Canada side as I have never used them at Bishop. However, the lounge area on the Porter side offers a very nice, relaxed experience while waiting for flights. Small snacks and coffee (or tea or water) are free for everyone and there are other snacks and drinks available for purchase. The seating is nice allowing one to relax. A work surface is often available to use laptops, etc.
The check-in and security processes are quite easy at Bishop compared to other airports. The pre-security area is nicely spacious with plenty of automated check-in machines. The security is efficient and the agents are relatively pleasant.
Arrival at YTZ is easy as far as luggage claim and getting away from the airport. I have not flown there directly from the US so I cannot speak firsthand concerning the Customs and Immigration processes. However, my colleagues have done so and seemed to have no complaints about the experience.
Overall, this is one of my favorite airports to use. There are not many that allow access on foot. The facility itself is nice and the security and check-in processes are more than adequate. If you plan to visit downtown Toronto, this is a much superior choice compared to Pearson.
