  • I'm new to the term "Izakaya" which originated from sake shops that allowed customers to drink in their establishment. There's an open kitchen with bar seating all around and I believe 4 sets of semi-private tables. The menu consists of mostly cooked foods, with limited sushi items on the last page and separate added menus of monthly specials, most popular dishes (both with pictures) and a sushi roll menu. What I noticed first was the seasonings on the table (see picture.) This was my first Kyara lesson. In addition to the standard salt, pepper and soy sauce, there was an additional shaker of spice (ichimi - ground chili pepper) and two special containers one filled with what our server could only describe as seasoning she likes on the skewers (sansho - which I googled to find out that it is a plant in which you pulverize the berries to make this pepper) and the other was seven different spices (shichimi - which sansho is one of the main peppers, orange peel, black and white sesame seeds, hemp seed, ground ginger, and seaweed) which was incredibly yummy on everything. When I went to my trusty yelp app I noticed there was a check in offer for a free appetizer. Come to find out they've changed it to a free dessert - however I'm not a "sweets" person and asked if I could have a miso soup instead and they accommodated. Yay! Unfortunately, it was very mildly flavored and not as hot as I would have preferred. Boo! I ordered the shiitake mushrooms $1.50 each, shishito peppers $1.50 each (picture is of two orders) pork belly $2.50, chicken gizzard $2.50, deep fried squid $3.80, octopus, halibut and albacore nigiri $4 each. The mushrooms, peppers and pork belly were delicious. All cooked perfectly. The pork belly had just enough fat to balance the flavor and was juicy. The gizzard was ok and the squid was a little on the dry side. Although the squid came with lemon, and wasn't greasy, it needed something. I was thinking of maybe a sauce to dip in but they didn't really have anything. The sushi was ok. Not the best quality but I should have expected this as sushi is not what they're known for. So many other things I wanted to try so I'll definitely come back. (Especially to try the gyutan stew - beef tongue $12.) Service was excellent and Soichiro was delightful and extremely helpful and patient with all my questions.
