  • I was looking for a new boxing class to try and a friend who attends the North Charlotte location recommended CKO boxing so I decided to sign up for the free trial class. The spaced is lined with 4 rows of bags, 2 rows on each side of the room with the instructor being in the middle & speaking through a headset & speakers. There are a few other pieces of equipment but not very much at all so I knew this class would be focused purely on boxing which pleased me even more. Being familiar to boxing I didn't require much instruction as far as what the moves were for my first class but Mark is amazing and overlooked me and made sure I had proper technique. He is a really nice guy, very personable. Each class has sections where you focus on different things. There boxing/kickboxing, abs, and burnout sessions in each. The instructor sometimes walks around and gives one one one workouts with punch mitts during the workout for multiple people. I finished my workout dripping in sweat. It was amazing! There are a few other instructors in the gym that i've tried. They are pretty good but none as good as the owner Mark. There is a female instructor named Melanie who i'm not a fan of. She mumbles her instructions, and skips words because she is too into doing them herself that she doesn't notice that we are staring at her trying to figure out what to do half the time. I'd heard the other location in North Charlotte offered a monthly option so I thought I would be able to sign up for the same thing here but I was wrong. Apparently in order for him to "make money" and for "you to get the full benefit" of the class he has to offer a minimum of 3 months. I prefer monthly because I like to change up my workouts so I don't get bored. I saw a Groupon for the Gym for a month of classes and decided to purchase that instead. It was basically the same amount as a monthly class without the $100 enrollment fee! The enrollment fee is what swayed me from becoming a member. When I returned to use it I received an entire speech about how i'd already tried a class so the groupon wasn't valid, and all groupons are like this (which isn't true a lot of gyms still accept it because it's only 1-2 trial classes, not a big deal), and how he doesn't make any money with groupons, how groupons work, and how the purpose of groupons is to get people in the gym. This was completely unnecessary, annoying & uncomfortable. If you don't like Groupons, don't put them out there.... I know how groupons work and their purpose... It did bring someone in the gym *raises hand*... And if you're that uptight about me trying 1 class and then buying the month groupon just say you won't take it and i'll get it refunded. Lecture not necessary. After all of that, he decided to still honor it, but to be honest I was uncomfortable the rest of my month with him. I've used all sorts of gym Groupons and I am a return customer to them even afterwards, so I didn't like the way I was treated with that. But, all in all, I would still return. The workouts are well worth it and they do not take it light on you. I am sweating and pushing myself the entire time and when I leave I feel completely fulfilled. I would definitely recommend CKO Kickboxing to someone else... but if you get Groupons like me, get it before you do the trial class here lol.
