Ever wonder why small specialty shops that have a deli and/or restaurant have the best food? I figure it's because they use off the shelf ingredients that they sell. And HAJI BABA is a perfect example. Their food is not gourmet. It's not a fad-diet phenom. It's not even even hip. What it is...is the look and taste of carefully prepared traditional food that these folks would eat at home. Their food brings back memories from when I was a kid. The difference? I now appreciate the savory flavors and blends of herbs and spices that goes into making their food. During every visit, my wife buys treats with Nutella, also something I grew up with in Europe. My kids have to get their own flavor of Chiklets gum-remember those? We never leave without a plate of baklava to go.
My favorite dish is the gyro plate. It's under $10 and always has been. The plate is heaped with tender meat, fresh tossed salad with dressing and light and fluffy rice. Its like sitting inside your dream car with your hand on the steering wheel - revving the motor. It's the absolute best.
Try it. You won't leave hungry or empty handed.
