| - I have been on a cupcake crawl of sorts for the last couple of weeks since we decided to do cupcakes for my daughter's birthday in June. Well today, my sister and I headed over to Half Baked Ideas on Mt. Pleasant to pickup some cupcakes I had ordered to taste. The customer service I had received from Half Baked was excellent. It was so good, I felt bad that they may not be chosen for the birthday only because they offered 3 types of cake only - chocolate, vanilla and lemon. Anyways, I will write my Half Baked Review on their page. This is about Lollicakes. Suffice to say, Half Baked is very good if limited flavors.
After my sis and I had a coffee and sampled a couple of cupcakes,we decided to walk the block to Lollicakes. We are new from Vancouver here and had discovered bakeries through google search and had noticed the proximity of Lollicakes to Half Baked.
Inside Lollicakes, at first it looked so cute and pretty. Then I noticed that it was actually like Mrs Haversham's home and crammed with knick knacks and all sorts of cheap looking cutesy displays, figurines, fake cupcakes and do it yourself cupcake toppers, picks, and cupcake wrappers for sale.
We looked in the display and there were only a bunch of mini size cupcakes. They were super tiny, the size of a bite size brownie or the ones my daughter bakes in her easy bake oven.Don't be surprised by the tiny size if you head over. I had expected mini cupcakes the size of other bakeries or those at Sobeys. If you buy your own cupcake liners, you can get them in regular size, mini and super mini. These are supermini cupcakes.
They only have chocolate or vanilla as others stated. The icing was either white, chocolate or a neon rainbow concoction that little girls may love but kind of freaked me out as did what came next. I asked the sales lady if they cooked their buttercream and if they had fondant. The salesgirl said, "Oh there's no dairy in our icing." I looked at her and asked, "Well what's in there then?" and she just stared at us. Literally stared for like 3 awkward minutes. I said, " I am purchasing for a kids birthday and would really like to know what's in the food so if there's no dairy, what is it? Shortening?" The salesgirls said, "Well there is shortening, yes." and my sister jumps in and says, "Is it a secret?" and the salesgirl says, "yes, I am not allowed to say." So I said,"Well I don't want any allergens, is there any soy or anything else?" and the girl says, "There are no allergens and we have never had a complaint and we fill a lot of orders for non dairy products. We do no eggs too and actually, I prefer our cupcakes without eggs to the ones with eggs." I asked about the coloring and she said it was food coloring and all the icing tasted the same but was colored. I was really starting to wonder about the hype.
I asked about the costs and this is where I was really blown away. The mini cupcakes are $3 each with no specialization. With a crown or other small motif for my daughter's princess party, they are $4 each! For minis and there is no deal for dozens. The regular size are $5 each and $6 with figure or motif of any sort on them and once again, no discount for buying a few dozen.
The salesgirl did say that if you purchased their plastic or paper toppers or cupcake liners (Wilton brand found everywhere and online cheaper), that they would bake the cupcakes for you in the liners and you could put the toppers in or they would. Still costs you $3 a mini though.
They did have cute shaped chocolates in different shapes but I was here for cupcake talk.
My sister and I just had to try a mini cupcake before we left. I asked for a vanilla with the rainbow icing. I just was too curious. I handed over my toonie and change and took a bite of half and passed the other half to my sister. Immediately my mouth tasted sugary grains and an odd residue on the roof of my mouth. I didn't really notice the cake except it was unremarkable. Walking down the street to my car, I had an aftertaste in my mouth and had to swill water.
I turned to my sister and asked what she thought.Afterall, she is much younger than me. She said, "That was totally disgusting and such a let down after the other cupcake shops. I don't get how they stay in business, the salesgirl was a weirdo and did you notice no one else came in there the whole time? If they can't tell you what's in their food, then they shouldn't expect you to eat it and we are dumb that we did."
She was right.
Overall, so disappointing and will never go there again.
