| - I've been following Chris Siu (@bakersiu on Instagram) for a while now and also saw him on Masterchef. Do yourself a favor and check out his/DaanGo's Instagram because those cakes look incredible and it's obvious that a lot of care is taken into designing them as well as the flavors.
DaanGo Cake Lab is located in a tiny strip plaza (I hesitate to even call it that) on Midland Ave., just one street north of the group of plazas between Silver Star Blvd. and Finch Ave. I didn't count the parking spots, but there are very, very few of them - around 30 spots, likely less. Actually maybe a bit more than 20. It was raining when I visited and I saw people waiting in their cars so that others could hop in and out of the car.
Even though it was raining, there was a fairly steady amount of customers going in and out - I imagine on a nice day there would be even more. Daan Go offers a variety of unique cakes, macarons, and tarts. They are all gorgeous. All this commands a higher price point, which is fair.
What's all over Instagram right now is their character macarons which are absolutely adorable. I decided to try three macarons as this was my first time, which was $10 for 3, $30 for 9, and $3.50 for 1 (+ tax). Pretty pricy for macarons but I was willing to give it a shot... not ready to pay $30 for 9 macarons just yet. I got the mango, blueberry, and strawberry (Winnie the Pooh, Sully, and Piglet). When you first bite into the cookie portion there is a nice crisp sound of it cracking which gives way to the chewy inside and then the creamy filling. The mango one didn't do this - perhaps it was a leftover from the day before and not as fresh? Either way the textures were quite good.
These were all fruit flavors and quite strong, especially the mango and strawberry. My only comment about this is that while the flavors are strong, the taste is slightly artificial (especially the strawberry). Another reviewer has said they only use natural ingredients and flavors and I wonder if this applies to the macarons? I think I'll try the non-fruit flavors next time like salted caramel and pistachio to see how they compare. They are also a bit too sweet for me but this could be said of any other macaron. Definitely meant to go with a tea/coffee to offset the sugar.
I'm so glad this is close to home and I have a feeling I'll be spending way too much of my money here. Excited to try the cakes (especially 3:15!) and the tarts for next time. And don't forget the 5% check in discount like I did!
