Shortly after I moved to Calgary, I inherited a small feline companion for a short-term stay that lasted a bit longer. Westmount Animal Clinic was the closest veterinarian to my apartment, which summarizes my only reason for going there.
My first few visits to the clinic were to purchase food. My mom has been feeding her cats Medi-Cal food since they were kittens. 15 years later and those cats are still healthy as ever.
Medi-Cal food is expensive when compared to the food you'll find at a local grocery store. It's also only available at veterinarians. And between different veterinarians, you will find significant price differences. I have found places selling a medium sized bag for $30, others selling it for $25, and some selling it for as high as $40. Westmount is usually somewhere in the middle. Not the cheapest, but definitely not the most expensive.
Thankfully, I only had to bring along my companion for a visit once. She had developed some issues with her stomach. I'll never understand how, but it seems veterinarians have a magical effect on animals (or they are just so terrified they will do anything). Westmount is no exception, and my usually sketchy cat was like a kitten in their hands. It was a quick procedure, but a great experience for both of us.
