  • A few caveats for this tour - it's guided, so you won't be able to mill around (this contrasted from my tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House earlier this year, where you go as you like and there are docents available to answer questions); many sections of the house are off-limits (consistent with my experience at other FLW houses); and it's indoor/outdoor, so depending on the time of day or season, be sure you are dressed and bring sunscreen or mosquito repellent as appropriate; and yes, you can bring your camera (surprised me, as inside Hollyhock they requested no photography). With all of that out of the way, if you're a fan of FLW you should absolutely go. You'll find many of his design trademarks at work here, and learn much about how he wanted the home to fit into its desert habitat. This was a very remote location when the house was originally built - he even petitioned the President of the United States to get rid of the ugly above-ground power lines after they went in! (Didn't work, they're still there.) Our guide was extremely detailed. I even learned a lot about lighting :) While the tours may seem pricey, they do sell out so I recommend booking ahead, and the funds go toward preservation so it is absolutely worthwhile.
