| - A friend convinced me to switch from Sephora to Ulta due to the reward system. I was very hesitant and weighed every single last detail before making the plunge. After my Sephora VIB status expired, I jumped ship. It's been four months and I'm loving it.
Now I know this isn't just me, but this may be silly to you. I can't stand going into a makeup store without a full face. I just feel like the employees are going to judge me. Thankfully my boyfriend doesn't really mind going in for me. At Sephora he loved it. They always thought he was so cute and mindful to buy my makeup for me or return things. They would always throw in a few extra cologne samples for him along with whatever makeup samples they had for me. Seriously, he always had a smile on his face afterwards.
The first purchase I made was online. Sephora is ALWAYS better to order from online. You get way better samples and extras. Ulta, not so much. They don't really do the samples for every order. It was an adjustment for me, but not a problem considering their reward system. So I stopped feeling the need to wait three days to get my products. I almost hate to admit this, but the first time I wanted to grab something from this actual store was for the stupid temptation of the bonus for Ariana Grande's perfume. It was this cute little poofy white bag with cat ears and a gold chain. It reminded me of her character on Scream Queens so much I had to have it. Of course I actually did like the perfume sample I got in a magazine. I wanted to go asap to make sure I could get the bag, but I didn't feel like putting on makeup. So I sent my boyfriend in.
This was in January so I still didn't have the best grip on the system. Nor did my boyfriend. So when checking out he asked about the amount I had to hit to become Ulta's version of VIB (Platinum, $450). The person on the register didn't understand what he was asking about and eventually just told him not to worry about it. My boyfriend said it sounded like she implied he couldn't afford it. I guess it was a cheap perfume and my boyfriend was undoubtedly not dressed up, but that's not something you do.
Well I messaged Ulta on Facebook. Explained. They definitely made it up. They gave me a gift card and said the manager would put together a sample bag for both my boyfriend and myself. The sample bag was pretty packed especially considering Ulta just doesn't do samples much. I was incredibly pleased. The manager also apologized profusely to my boyfriend.
Ever since I haven't had a single problem, and trust me, I'm paying attention to every little detail. I've heard so many problems people have with Ulta. The one that wigs me out the most is repackaging used products. I can thankfully say I haven't seen anything like that this store or the East side one.
All the other employees at this store are very nice and are almost as friendly as Sephora. I don't mind the step down in friendliness and actually prefer it! I'm not so big on the getting help from employees thing. I much prefer researching online.
The reward system is AMAZING. Watch for those x5 point emails! I scored almost $8 worth of points on my regular UD foundation purchase. I've gotten a bit more makeup than I normally would, but it's just about to hit May and I've already got $53 worth of points.
One huge downside, they don't carry most of my favorite brands. No NARS. No Kat Von D. No Bobbi Brown. No Makeup Forever. I can live without the Makeup Forever, I've gotten a recommendation to replace my Bobbie Brown gel liner (supposedly Smashbox has a good one), but I don't know what to do about NARS. There's no way I can go without Kat Von D's lip products though! Plus if the Smashbox gel isn't as good I'm going to have to get the Bobbi Brown one from Sephora. I don't like to skimp on the eyeliner. I'm having to make minor purchases at Sephora every now and again and it's driving me crazy. It makes me worry I'm not getting the most from this store. They also get the better exclusives at Sephora like the UD Urban Spectrum palette.
I definitely am growing to love Ulta, this store included, but I just wish they'd score the better name brands.
