When I first moved to Madison, I made a list of all the guitar shops and then spent at least an hour in each one. As a player, I know that sooner or later, I would need to buy strings, need adjustments made to my instruments, maybe even buy a new one. It's very hard to find 'The One" store in any town but you need to know what's out there.
I was really impressed with MMC. I spent at least an hour playing several different gorgeous acoustic guitars that I could never afford. I was "looking" at several parlor-size guitars to perhaps replace my Baby Taylor (for travel). I took them through their paces and worked them over pretty well. The guy I spoke with was knowledgeable, helpful but never in my face. After hearing me play, he even recommended a local player that I might be interested in hearing.
They don't do repairs and suggested two other shops that I had already been to for the adjustments I would need. I bought strings and a couple of acoustic guitar humidifiers. I wouldn't call them snobby, they're simply serious about quality acoustic guitars. Great shop!
