| - From S+P incorporated, Spoon has been gracing the Pittsburgh scene for almost 3 years now, situated on the corner of center and s highland in the latest up-and coming East Liberty location.
The space is roomy yet intimate, if that can be understood, with an atmosphere of sophistication and carefully crafted food. If it's a date or a pre-interview school event, Spoon makes all it's guests feel welcome and attended to. To drink I had a berry caipirinha, that delicious south american rum drink that just reminds me of summer. If you like berries, this drink is full of them so order up, however, if you are looking for a good portion of actual rum, you may want to go with another selection. The pomegranates and berries soak up the liquid so prepare to eat a bit of fruit. Later in the meal I switched to pleasant Cabernet Sauvignon.
Yesterday's meal was a little rocky so I will be pulling from all experiences i had. I started off with an appetizer of the pate en croute, cooked in a typical rectangular mold and served with grain mustard and cornichons and red pickled onions. I had gotten so used to liver pates that so me, this unspreadable version was a readjustment. Pickled red onions were a perfect offset, I almost wish there had been more than provided.
As I naturally can never make up my mind, I strayed from the traditional entrees to the small/large plates so I can have two. I ordered the spring risotto, made with local ramps, English peas, beans, asparagus, and drenched in parmesan; a creamy mixture in a half bowl. Now a couple things, personally I did not like the ramp and asparagus combination, the garlicky taste did not mesh well but that's just flavoring on my end. My second small plate was their Rabbit and Pork Sugo with fresh rigatoni and preserved rooftop tomatoes, a melt in your mouth combination that would have kept me going forever.
Now whether or not the dish was to your liking or not, I personally was peeved with the presentation of the small plates. While I enjoy the curved white bowl and allow the risotto or pasta to sink to the side, the small portion will leave a lot of blank space, that I feel should have been addressed.
The lovely part about spoon are their specialty brunch menus. Normally closed on Sundays, they will offer special occasion Sunday, such as Mother's Day or Easter. These brunch menus are excellent and perfect for a nice group of people or family. Make sure to reserve yourself a spot for these, you will not be disappointed.
