| - Meh - it's aight!
You know when the night starts off kinda rough at a restaurant and then from that point on it never really recovers? Well that's what happened, and me waiting a couple of days is what has leveled this off as a 3 star as opposed to 2.
So here's what happened, we arrived shortly before the end of the Toronto FC game and while waiting to get into the grounds (we had even purchased advanced tickets) the game let out and with the 20-30K people with that. Maybe it was just bad luck but we got stuck in the worst crowds for about 40 minutes that I have ever seen. You were stuck standing still, no one could come or go, people were angry and shoving and nearly a dozen fights broke out because of the high tension. Comfortability aside, this was a HUGE mess up by the festival as this was incredibly unsafe, had anyone needed assistance they would have surely taken a turn for the worse or died. It was bad. I found myself helping a father of two small kids to form a barrier around them so they wouldn't get crushed.
Once we were free of that situation we could no longer backtrack to the food building because it would require us trekking through the crowd again, so the one thing I was looking forward to... I missed out on.
I don't know what the CNE has been in past but past the shows, rides, games and food, it's basically the biggest clearance/outlet center/flea market around. Every building is slammed with sales on everything from knick knack crap (and there's a lot of that) to furniture and home decor from around the world, some of it was kinda cool but for the most part it was pretty crap, but if you're a bargain hunter then the CNE is for you.
My personal grumblings aside there were some bright spots such as the rib vendors, the food on the midway (including the corndog which was made with real cornbread dough so it was slightly sweet) and the CNE bandshell, we heard Scott Weiland (formally of STP) was performing that night so we made our way over to the bandshell and just as we arrived I discovered that one of my favourite Ontario bands The Glorious Sons was just wrapping up their set (I was so bummed I missed out on seeing them).
Our last stop of the night was to get some gambling in before taking on the rides. We walked in, got carded twice, looked around and walked out. Hardly a casino, bright fluorescent lights on, people crowding the 3 sections like hogs at feeding time... Not worth a $25 table minimum.
My closing comments about the ex will be this - it's a money suck. If you buy a ride all day pass you save yourself a pile of money as rides essential cost from $4-$6 each time per person. The pass can cost $38 if you get it through and EX partner, considering the cost of admission it works to your fav out if you go on even 3-4 rides.
Food, drink, ridiculous. Skydome beer prices. Just nuts!
Will I be back? Once every couple of years sure, despite the negatives it's still a fun night out. But I'd rather go to Canada's wonderland
