| - We got stuck in Phoenix when our flight out was canceled and needed a place to stay for two more nights. This was the best we could get on short notice during the height of spring tourist season. What a place! When I checked in, there was a guy wearing gym shorts (and not much else) in the lobby offering a bottle of pills to his "lady friend" whose ravaged face and bad teeth bore all the signs of a meth addict. The room was passable, small and with working air conditioning, plus a tube TV. We noticed a couple of roaches and the grout under the bathroom door was all crumbly. The wall desk lamp didn't work at all. The name "Xerox" was written in marker above the door. Stains on the mattresses. Funny smell throughout the room. If those walls could talk, my guess is they wouldn't be all that articulate or coherent. We stayed in a handicapped accessible room and the bathroom was actually handicapped accessible, roomy and with a shower that had a solid bench and good water pressure. That was the best part.
We were out all day and when we got back around 3:00 the room still wasn't cleaned up. I went to the front desk and said we would be leaving for dinner at 4:00 so they could clean up then. He called housekeeping to let them know. We also told the maid when she came by at 3:30 or so. Of course, when we returned at 8:00, the room was not cleaned. When I went to the front desk to complain, they gave us 10 percent off the bill, though I demanded a copy of the bill to be sure that we got the 10 percent off. He told me we could have the maid come and clean immediately, but we wouldn't get the 10 percent discount. I just took the fresh towels (more like cloth sandpaper), and didn't bother with the room cleaning. When I was there complaining, there was a another customer arguing with the clerk. Seems they screwed up his reservations made in advance and gave him a room a couple of rooms with one bed when he needed rooms with two beds. The clerk didn't appear to be helpful. I just got out of there. Didn't need to see THAT argument.
Seems like truckers, bikers, college kids, and a few families were staying there, and it wasn't as scary as the initial impression. But I was sure glad to leave!
Stay for the atmosphere if you're slumming. Avoid because of the atmosphere if you're not!
