It took me a long time to finally visit Lidia's. Unfortunately for Lidia's, it might take a long time to return. Perhaps the years of anticipation created these higher expectations.
Lidia's is certainly beautiful in design and provides a great setting for a special occasion. Very comfortable surroundings with the ability to conduct normal volume levels of conversation with one another. No shouting necessary.
Menu and drink options were nice, but not attention grabbing. They announced that they have a new tavern menu but no information was provided or posted.
Food quality and portions were below expectations. It was the first time I was not able to finish a salad at an Italian restaurant due to the displeasure of the house made vinaigrette dressing. I have had better bottled versions. Sauces lacked flavor.
Level of service did not match the cost of the meal. Service was attentive but that was about it. Some servers seem to be more obsessed with clearing plates and glasses off the table rather than be more engaging with their dinner guests. An example of this is taking a plate or drink away without first asking if they may do so.
I really don't want to completely give up on re-visiting Lidia's, but with so many other places yet to try, Lidia's finds themselves out of the top spot . I would, however, easily reconsider if Lidia herself was preparing the meal! What a delight that would be!
