| - With how often I talk about events at Mississauga City Hall, I am somewhat ashamed that I've never spoken about the biggest space in the city - Celebration Square.
After all, any venue that can handle the kinds of events this place runs (on a weekly basis, no less) is well worth your time.
I'm not understating things when I say that Celebration Square hosts a good 70-80% of major festivals in the city. Everything from the City Centre Canada Day celebrations, to cultural events like ItalFEST and the annual Ukrainian Festival, more standard fare like the Rotary Ribfest and Farmers' Market, yoga classes and movie nights, and everything in between.
It helps that half the square is protected by astroturf, which makes it a very suitable playground for enterprising children. I never fail to see groups of kids playing soccer in the square or just camping out whenever I visit.
The square also has a massive stage that is the central nexus for live performances, more "shaded" areas which are prime spots for vendors to park at during festivals, and a giant public fountain on the far side of the square (near City Hall) that is perfect for lounging by on a hot day.
Add in stuff like the newly-opened Legends' Row walkway and the nearby flower garden (complete with benches), and you can see how this square appeals to a wide variety of demographics.
The city staff really hit the nail on the head when they first envisioned this space. Permanently closing off the street between the library and City Hall has also helped expand the space as a true public square, which I feel is greatly needed in a time where everything is being built up and out with no regard for public spaces.
Celebration Square is one of my favored destinations in the city, and I always make it a point to stop and take in everything that's happening whenever I walk through it.
Make this a prime spot to visit if you're ever in Mississauga.
