Family member said this place was AWESOME and had the best white pizza...told a co-worker about it.. Co-worker went and reported back it was really good. "Better pizza than Mamma Mia, and we REALLY like Mamma Mia." So maybe my expectations were too high, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back to Pino's.
Service was laid-back and friendly. Refills were frequent, no complaints on service. Our table of four ordered two caesar salads, two 10" pizzas and one meatball sandwich.
So how was the food? Caesar salad was average. Dressing was served on the side. Normally I appreciate salad dressing on the side, but with Caesar for some reason I always want it mixed in. Quirky, I know, I'm not knocking off a star for that, but just thought I'd mention it. It came with some fresh-baked bread that was AMAZING. Sadly, that bread was the highlight of the meal.
The white pizza was VERY oily. Very. Oily. I also didn't notice that the first ingredient listed on the menu was "fresh tomatoes"...I know, that's my own fault, but if I'd been paying closer attention I would have asked for it without. Fresh tomatoes on pizza = gross. At least they were easy to pick off and didn't leave a "tomato trail" (you tomato-haters know what i'm talking about). There was nothing special about the garlic/basil/cheese on the pizza. it was somehow too much topping without being much of anything. I will say that the crust was amazing. At least the outside of it - you know, the part that wasn't completely soggy with all the oil. Did I mention the pizza was OILY?
The Carnivori pizza was their version of "meat-lovers". I tasted a tiny sliver of it so I shouldn't really judge, but it did nothing for me. Although I will say it was NOT oily, so at least I know that was ONLY a bi-product of the White pizza not just their general method of preparation.
The nibble of meatball sandwich I had was okay. Nothing offensive, but nothing to write home about.
Overall, this place gets a "Meh-I've experienced better" 2-stars. I WANT to like it more. I WANT to give it a higher rating, but something just didn't click. The breads and pizza dough are amazing (baked in-house and you can tell!). I feel like this place has a REALLY strong foundation, and is SO CLOSE to being amazing...but they fell short.
Everything was "okay"...Even the oily pizza wasn't horrible. No one could complain about anything they ate...it just didn't provide any "Mmmm..."'s...or "OMG - TASTE THIS!" moments (other than the bread). I suppose if I lived or worked in the area, I'd go back and find some sandwich I liked, but it's not in my normal "route" and I didn't find any reason to go back.
Except for the bread....I'm tempted to bump up my rating to a 3 JUST for the bread...damn that was good bread.
