| - Led by another fantastic Groupon deal, I found myself at La Stilista for a 60 minute custom blended facial and a brow wax this morning. They are located on the 2nd floor of the Park Building on 5th ave downtown, by the T-Mobile and Sprint stores. You're on your own for parking, so be prepared to spend another $5 or so for that.
The space itself is very open and mostly in good shape. There are large areas for hair styling, shampoo, and nails. I was greeted a little awkwardly by Chris, the lady who was performing both the facial and wax. After some quick paperwork, we were on our way.
The facial room was a bit cluttered; not dirty, really, just seemed like stuff is stored in there haphazardly. Chris was nice and professional, and I felt like I was in capable hands. She took a look at my skin before starting, discussed my concerns and skin goals with me, and at each step she explained what she was doing. There were no extractions, which I didn't mind, and my facial included a cleaning, exfoliation/enzyme mask, hydrating gel, hydrating mask, and then moisturizer. These were punctuated by a nice hand massage and an extended (and quite luxurious) face massage. At this point, I'm comfortable giving La Stilista 4 stars. However, things quickly went south.
The brow wax was easily a one star experience. Not only did she do a spectacularly mediocre job, but it actually hurt (and still hurts) and I'm quite red. Cherry on top: $18!!! I can only assume that was the best brow wax that she could do, so I strongly caution you, dear reader, about brow waxes here.
Sadly, things continued on a mediocre trajectory. Oddly, I wasn't impressed by how my skin looked after the facial. The facial went great, but I guess the products they use just aren't for me? Chris met me at the front desk, pushed a recommendation sheet with her card attached towards me, and said, "Here's the.... you know..." Uh. I guess I do know? Weird. Then there's a really awkward silence, where I'm waiting to pay for my brow wax and tip her, and she goes, "Oh, do you want to schedule another appointment?" I reply, "no, I need to pay for my brow wax, and could you tell me the full price of the facial, please." This really throws her, and she has to look up the price for each service (that's when I'm hit with the $18 horrible brow wax bomb). Then, she didn't know how to work the card machine, and had to call over the owner, and it was all just really strange. She seemed actually shocked that I tipped her, too. Maybe they've gotten some bad Grouponers who didn't tip? The whole check-out experience was just awkward.
So, started out pretty strong, and had a bad finish. I guess technically, I should give them two stars, but three seems appropriate.
