| - The Senator John Heinz History Center. The senator was obviously from the infamous tasty Heinz foods family, but curious to know more about this gentleman, I did a brief Google search. I was quickly saddened to read about his death and the death of others in a horrific plane crash in 1991. Those are the first details that pop up, but he was also a hard working, well respected, well liked politician from the area and so this center is named in his honor. Very appropriate as the center is the place to visit to learn of all the great things and people that originated in Pittsburgh. Affiliated with the Smithsonian, there are some rare one of a kind items here such as a stainless steel car, the first war time jeeps, a humongous canon, a restored trolly car, etc., etc. Pittsburgh was also home to some pretty remarkable people, including the Heinz family, the Carnegie family, Dr. Jonas Salk (inventor of polio vaccination), Mr. Rogers, and the list goes on and on. Oh yes, and who could forget the Steelers?! There is also a Sports Museum collection on one of the floors with all kinds of treasures from not just the Steelers, but the Pirates, Penguins, and other local teams.
We spent about 90 minutes here and did not make it to all the floors. So much to see, so little time! My favorite exhibit was Mr. Rogers even though the exhibit was very small. Brought back some nice childhood memories.
