Paulette's - The Emperor's New Clothes
Paulette's looks cool and trendy and that's about where the satisfaction of the visit ends. The chicken was nothing special. It tasted like it had been pre-roasted before deep frying but that dryness could have been a result of it sitting out all day. The brine exuded a lemon flavour but when I am eating fried chicken that's not exactly the taste I am looking for. They got one thing right: it was crispy. Moving on.
After eating the chicken we decided that the establishment's well-acclaimed reputation was based upon the doughnuts, therefore we were willing to give them a shot. Unfortunately, another strike-out. The doughnuts were dry and flavourless. Before even eating them we had prophesized that they would all be comprised of the same cake base with different glazes and sugars. We were correct. Boring.
When viewing the doughnuts in the glass cabinet they looked large, and I am sure if I had received an actual doughnut mine would have been the same size. I ended up ordering the plain doughnut and unfortunately was given an end-of-the-day "mini" plain doughnut, which had obviously been substituted for the full-size ones they ran out of. I hadn't noticed until I left the store, which was when I pieced together the reason as to why the cashier had graciously offered us free ketchup packets even though they "weren't supposed to recommend ketchup with the Deep Fried Mac and Cheese (which was the highlight of the meal)".
Basically, suckers will be convinced that this place is excellent due to its trendy store front and their ridiculous prices. Thankfully I have a brain and choose to use it.
