| - I visited Muddy Waters Thurs. of the week before last for HH. I'd been wanting to check it out for awhile, but wasn't sure which of my friends enjoy--or would be willing to try--oysters. Given that Chelsea S. and I wanted to get together for HH, I suggested it. Fortunately, she was game, so we headed over to check it out.
We ordered a half dozen each of two different types of Oysters--West Coast and East Coast. At HH, oysters are discounted at $1 each for West Coast and $2 each for East Coast, but you have to order them by the half dozen to receive the discount. Between the two of us, we polished off a dozen quite easily. We started with the West Coast oysters, which were a variety from WA, and they were mild and creamy, as good West Coast oysters should be. We then proceeded to the East Coast variety, which were from VA, and they were brinier and chewier, but still delicious. I tried the one of each type unadorned, and both were definitely enjoyable in that form. However, they were improved by the tangy and slightly spicy mignonette sauce that came with them, so I added a helping of this to all subsequent bivalves.
As a Cajun/Creole themed bar, Muddy Waters specializes in drinks with New Orleans roots. Accordingly, I ordered a Ramos Gin Fizz and Chelsea ordered a French 75 ($10 each). This was my first gin fizz, and I can definitely call myself a fan! Due to the inclusion of beaten egg whites, it had a light, airy, and foamy head which gave way upon imbibing to a refreshingly tart liquid body. It had a nice alcoholic kick which was muted by the lemon and foam, making for a well-balanced drink. While I didn't try Chelsea's French 75, I could tell that she enjoyed it.
Although we didn't have a reservation, we were able to get seated without a problem at the oyster bar, where we were able to watch the employees shuck oysters. Service from our waiter was cordial, which was also nice. Overall, we very much enjoyed our HH experience at Muddy Waters, and would definitely return!
