If you haven't scheduled a trip to the Phoenix Art Museum (or if it's your first visit) now is the time to get there. The atmosphere is warm and helpful--this isn't your stuffy Museum (any longer). Children were engaged in different projects and not asked to walk single file with their mouths' zipped. The entry with the butterfly display is breathtaking and from this spot one may select several different routes, including their continual array of special exhibitions. If you love the impressionist period, the museum as a lot to offer as well as a decent selection of famous local/Western artists. A favorite floor of mine is downstairs where an incredible Mexican acrylic greets the viewer by artist, Vik Muniz (Decent from the Cross). I could spend an hour studying this single, magnificent piece. (We could use a bench here). I must add that the museum employee who watches over the art on the lower floor knew a great deal about this piece and others and really added to my understanding. He was a joy to spend time with asking questions during my last visit. The other area to mention is their expansive contemporary art collection. Overall, if you live in Phoenix or nearby, a membership is in order because it does take several visits to make your way through this gem of a museum.
