| - Ka was my second Cirque du Soleil show. My first was La Reve, which was positively spectacular, and I would definitely see again. Ka was nowhere near the level that La Reve was.
Ka is a martial-arts themed show. In the 15 minutes before the show starts, performers dressed like ninjas swing from balconies and scaffolding, giving what you think is a taste of what's to come. In many ways it's the highlight of the show.
The show itself has a ridiculous amount of downtime and interludes, dragging out a discombobulated storyline. The low for me was having to suffer through 5 full minutes of shadow puppet animals. The close second was clowns on a beach, and last but not least, a lone individual twirling a plain old baton for what felt like ages. Most of the action consists of aerial acrobatics and capoeira but they were not as technically difficult or ostentatious as what you'll see in LA Reve which in addition to acrobatics has divers, ballroom dancers, contortionists, and other skilled artists on display. The scenery was just ok. It consisted mainly of a pallet that moved and had lights projected on it.
To add to the less than captivating show, the venue kept on seating people nonstop for the first half hour of the show. Anyone at the beginning of the second level of seating would have had their view obstructed every 2 minutes, which was just ridiculous. Attendees also saw fit to get up and use the bathroom throughout the performance. It all made it that much harder to focus.
I would not recommend Ka. Had it been my first experience with Cirque du Soleil, I would never have gone back.
