| - I randomly came across a Momofuku milk bar when traveling in NYC and I was impressed with their desserts, so I finally decided to make the trip to the Toronto location to repeat the experience - unfortunately it was underwhelming in comparison.
The main problem is that the layout is a bit odd. You have to walk up the stairs to a large fridge, choose the items you want, with no assistance from anyone if you had any questions, and then walk back down the stairs to pay for the items. It's not the walking that's the problem, don't get me wrong, it's that the whole process seems disjointed and awkward. It felt weird to pay for my items by the crowded entrance where there are lots of people waiting to be seated, and people in the middle of leaving the Momofuku restaurants. I grabbed the cookies and the crack pie, and yes they were delicious, but weren't as delicious as I remembered from NYC, likely because they were just sitting in the fridge for some time.
I was a bit peeved to hear that they ran out of their cereal milk ice cream - which is one of their signature item at the milk bar, and the only reason why I made the trip to Momofuku in the first place. Considering that they only serve two flavours, I would've expected them to have proper stock of their signature items. I had to opt for the crack pie flavoured ice cream, which was good, but not as good as the cereal milk. Also, the ice cream is served right at the entrance of the restaurant, so I felt like the servers had their hands full serving ice cream while getting everyone seated at the restaurant - these two jobs should be kept separate. It would be better to move the ice cream machine upstairs and have one person there to cash people out and serve ice cream.
Overall, the desserts were good. I just wish that they had a better setup.
