  • My husband and I walked in here the other day with the hopes of rescuing a dog. Upon entry, the smell of animal waste slapped me in the face. I've never been to a shelter that smelled this bad before. I mean, the smell was overwhelming. It smelled as if it were smeared on my upper lip. Wow. Anyway, I tried to look past that because I was dead set on finding our forever fur baby. I went from window to window and I noticed there were anywhere from 6 to 9 dogs in a 10x10 space with maybe 2 -3 beds in each space. The dogs weren't busting at the seems, but it just seemed like there were too many dogs with very little places for them to sleep. I looked around at the animals on the other side and instead of beds, these poor dogs were laying on towels. Like really old, worn towels. The kind you recycle for car wash day. These poor animals don't have proper accommodations. Totally sad. I walked up and down checking out the demeanor of these dogs. Some were jumpy, some were excited, some were shaky, some looked scared, some looked miserable, some had pleading eyes and the longer I looked at these poor animals the more I questioned WHY are some of the scared dogs kenneling with the aggressive ones? Why are the disruptive dogs with the dogs that are visibly distraught? When we asked the woman about one dog, she said he wasn't up for adoption yet because he hadn't had his rabies shots. Excuse me? You put a dog that wasn't up to date with their rabies shots with other dogs that may or may NOT have had theirs? I mean, I'm not a vet, but I know you need to quarantine animals and check for skin conditions, fleas and make sure their up to date with their shots before mixing them with general population. They also had dogs that were freshly spayed on display. Being spayed is a major surgery. You can't put a dog in a stressful environment after being spayed. You just can't. That's downright mean. Why weren't these poor dogs in a recovery room? It was awful. As I looked at the big picture I started to see dog waste covering the floor of each room. Hence the stench. I told my husband and he pointed out one napping doggy surrounded by turds. Literally. It was like he/she was outlined in turds. I couldn't take it. I had to get out of there. When I asked about the adoption process, the woman said it was easy. All we had to do was fill out an application and pay the adoption fee. That's it? That's just a little TOO easy. No one offered to come to our home to do a home inspection, which I found odd. If you own and run a dog rescue, aren't you concerned with where these animals are being placed? I could be a psycho animal killer. Aren't you concerned about the welfare of the animals? Or do you just pick up strays, take in whatever you want, claim they're OK, collect the money and move on? Not OK. None of it.
