| - This is more of a review about one of Caribou's types of coffee, although I've always enjoyed Caribou Coffee in general (their shops). They are all friendly and have seemed to me to be the place to go if you are after a truly perfect cup of coffee and not too concerned about the status afforded you by carrying around a Starbucks mug. :)
Back to the point, Caribou's "Obsidian" coffee is almost perfect. It's probably the only coffee I like better than Dunkin Donuts coffee, brewed a little extra strong at home. It's certainly better than Dunkin from Dunkin which is a feat in and of itself.
What makes Obsidian so great is that it is absolutely, unequivocally a very dark roast, but without any of the bitterness usually associated with such dark roasts.
The beans are virtually black, and they are very oily. To look at it, it's pure French Roast. The aroma of the beans is intoxicating. But, with so many dark dark roasts, there is a down-side. Sometimes, it's a bitterness. Sometimes, it's a burnt flavor. Not with Obsidian.
I drink all coffee black. I love the flavor of coffee... while the caffeine affects me, I don't drink it for the buzz.
This coffee tastes like it has things added to it. It is complex, rich, and velvety smooth. It tastes like there is a nugget of fine, 60% dark chocolate melted into it.
When you're drinking beer, sometimes you want a hoppy IPA. And when you're drinking coffee, sometimes some bitter elements are quite welcome. But, sometimes you just want a creamy, chocolatey stout, and sometimes you want the same characteristics in your coffee.
I don't think there's a better tasting bean than Caribou's Obsidian.
