  • Oh THAT old watering hole? The one that you go to so often you forget you went there because it feels like home? This is one of mine. An old timey wimey joint with a well balanced menu that is great for chowhounds craving either a family-owned, upscale pubby dinner or a simple biere. ATMOSPHERE This is a Pub Restaurant. Capital letters. The archetype for resto pubs in my mind looks like this one. First thing: It's got history. Photos from hockey stars, celebrities, old Unionville memories, sports teams they've sponsored, caricatures of people I've probably met. It isn't pretentious. Not industrial chic or any kind of chic. Wood everywhere, but it isn't rustic. Just wood. The daily specials are written up in chalk. Half a dozen televisions in case there's a game on. GOOD FOR: Your Mom = If she likes restaurants but doesn't want to get her best shoes on. Groups = The place is big enough to hold probably ten or twelve women's hockey teams with the patio open. We had our year-end party with four teams in just one part of the place. Booths, bar, and space to put together one or two longer tables. A date = Not a bad place to start. Just classy enough to get off to a good start without scaring anyone away. FOOD Pub food with class. Order fries, calamari, Greek salad, or pub pie and sandwiches, or go for mussels, tilapia or Italian favourites like veal parmesan. I ordered PEI mussels, spring rolls, and sweet potato fries, all of them delicious. The mussels at $11 were very tasty and came hot with toasted ciabatta bread. The spring rolls were fine, nothing to talk about (we live in Markham, I'm spoiled, okay?) but the sweet potato fries. Wowsers, you know when you have great sweet potato fries and you can really taste the potato and it is fresh and hot enough to burn your mouth? Like that. Num. Beverages are quality but not exciting. Beer snobs, you will turn up your nose at the humble offerings at the Arms, which only feature the basics (Stella, Keith's, Molson, Creemore, Coors etc) but fear not, you can still order a Guiness on tap. SERVICE Attentive and personal without being overbearing, as expected. The owners always take care to hire quality people who care, and it shows. LOCATION On Unionville Main, the main and only drag in fair Unionville. Parking gives direct access into the back of the restaurant, which is easy to find and in a walkable area that is simply knockout gorgeous in the summer. Warning! The summer is the best time to go, obviously, but it is also the busiest. At prime time, parking may also be found across the street behind Crosby Arena. OVERALL You're still here? Get going already!
