| - Ah, the Thunderbolt. One of Kennywood's old school wooden coasters, it's been a beloved classic through the years - and for good reason. This is an iconic must for anyone visiting Kennywood. Be warned, though, that this ride starts throwing punches right after leaving the station. There's no immediate lift up a hill on this coaster - nope, instead it starts with a drop down into/just above the trees below the tracks; it's only after dropping that the train turns and begins an ascent that sets up the rest of the ride. Apparently one of my parents did not know about this on their first trip on the Thunderbolt. And that trip took place in the dark. It made for quite the thrilling experience, especially once you add in the other drops, dips and double loops around the station that follows.
An interesting bit of trivia: you may sometimes hear people refer to this ride as the Pippin. That was its original name when it was built in 1924. It lost this name when the ride was overhauled and rebuilt in the 1960s (although the trains it currently are actually left over from the days of the Pippin). But whatever name it goes by, the majority of people adore this coaster.
As far as I know, the Thunderbolt is still Kennywood's most popular ride, and it's voted as one of "the best" wooden coasters annually in various polls and publications. Now, like any other wooden coaster, riding on the wheels of the trains can admittedly be a little rough. If you love coasters but can't quite handle rough rides as well any more, get in line for a center seat when riding the Thunderbolt. It will make a big difference, trust me. Additionally, partners are required for this ride - so definitely try to ride with a good friend, so that neither of you mind when you're bumping into each other during the turns in the ride.
Finally, ENJOY! This ride is 100% fun - get on board and find out for yourself!
