| - I had a great dinner with work colleagues and it was excellent. At first, we were seated outside and the temperature was rapidly stopping and instead of offering to move us inside, we had to wait and beg for a table. Once inside, things started to look up.
The drink menu was short yet comparable to other drinks in the area. I didn't take a peek at the wine list, but I'm sure it was just as lovely.
We ordered appetizers first: oysters on the half shell were just okay, kind of mediocre. The mignonette was weak. As was the cocktail sauce. Ketchup with a little horseradish in it. The calamari was good, but the rings were cut a little to big, and there were no tentacles (my favorite part), French onion soup was VERY rich and flavorful, but again... It was just okay. The chopped salad was gross. It was watery, weepy and looked like it had been sitting in a fridge for 3 days. The dressing is balsamic and a little too tart. The carpaccio was great but had wayyyy too much truffle oil on it and the lettuce greens. The best app we had: baked goat cheese. The grilled bread was kind of fantastic.
It took an extraordinary amount of time to get our entrees, but I was pleased with my buttermilk sage fried chicken. It had the same breading as the calamari and I couldn't taste any sage, but it was very flavorful. The mashed potatoes (listed as chef's recommended accompaniments) were a little dry and chunky. The sauteed vegetables were the best things in the plate.
Why 4 stars? The prices were reasonable (except for a $60 steak, good Lord!), the atmosphere was upscale and it's very convenient choice that's close to Fremont Street. Would I return? Maybe. The dishes are classic-chicken, steaks, pasta, seafood and there's something for everyone on the menu.
