Wow - I actually came out of the DMV in a better mood than when I went in. Kudos to the DMV for investing in the online appointment system. I was out in less than 30 minutes and the person who helped me was incredibly efficient and nice.
Tips
1. Book an appointment online. And, do it at least a week in advance. If not, you will be waiting in a very long line (and the online appointments will likely be taken).
2. When you get there, don't wait in the long line. Walk past everyone and through the doors and look for the sign/counter that says "appointments".
3. Review the website and what documentation you need before you get there. I was thinking I was just going to need my old license and a passport. Wrong. Luckily, my husband went through the process a couple of weeks ago, and gave me a heads up. I ended up having three forms of identification, plus two proofs of addresses. And, backup to that, just in case they didn't like what I brought.
4. Print out and fill in the application before you get there (also online). This wasn't as clear on the website as it could have been. That said, I'm sure they will let you fill it out there, but they called me almost immediately after my initial document check.
5. Arrive a little early for your appointment. You will have to wait in a very short "already have an appointment line".
6. Have all your paperwork and docs ready.
From there is was smooth sailing.
