On July 3, 2017, we took our four year old daughter to the emergency room at Gilbert Hospital. She had fallen and had a split chin. Because she is so young and because of the location of the laceration being on her face, we decided to go to an emergency room instead of an urgent care (knowing that the costs would be much higher). We waited for a very short time and were treated very well by the doctor and nurse. The laceration was not too deep and they were able to quickly clean and glue the wound and we even received ice pops. We were in and out in about thirty minutes. The hospital's reputation for being fast is the exact reason we chose this hospital. I did not want my scared toddler waiting in an ER for hours to be seen. This was great....until we checked out. We have a high deductible insurance plan and knew we would be paying quite a bit for an emergency room visit. We were expecting around $800. We were told the bill for the visit was $1103. We were a little surprised that such a short visit and what seemed to be a simple procedure, would be so high. Nevertheless, we paid the bill in full with a credit card. AFTER paying the bill we were then told that the doctor would bill separately. The $1103 was simply the hospital facility fee. Honestly felt a little bit deceived by this practice. We were told that it should only be another $100 or so. Today, six weeks later we received the separate bill from the doctor for $513. The doctor spent no more than five minutes with us.
I am truly so grateful that we were in and out so quickly and this was not a traumatizing experience for our daughter. Her scar has healed very well and we are so thankful for that. I just in good conscience can not recommend that others choose this hospital when we have now paid over $1600 for a very low level procedure.
Life is not fair, and neither is our health care system but I just truly feel that these charges are really excessive. Please consider these issues when making a choice to seek care at this facility.
